MOVING THE FORUMS

Postby JamieCOTC » Thu Feb 09, 2017 7:14 pm

Hey,

I've been currently trying to update this site for more customization and I can't do it. The current PHPBB 3 is out of date and I tried to update it to no avail. So, I will be moving the site to ProBoards. As I understand it's much easier to manage than PHP and maybe then I'll be around more. Thanks!

Jamie

Will it be possible to move the entire forum or does this mean starting from scratch again?

I'll make sure I have my backup of Renée's profile. Just in case :)
Noticed I'll have to edit it anyway, since the links to my images no longer work.

In any case I hope it all goes smoothly :)

What I'll likely do is leave this forum up and just start the new one. I won't delete this one. Back up what you have, though. As far as moving this forum, if anyone knows how to do that, great, if not, yes, starting over again. Sorry.

There are converters for Simple Machine forums. It might be easier to work with. That being said I've only worked with phpBB (and at that time I made the mistake of using old version, customised theme for it and then realised it would have been pain to upgrade because the theme wouldn't have worked).

That's not the issue here. The plan is to use completely different forum software (or service, which ProBoards is) and not to move existing forums to another server.

Well, phpBB has been somewhat pain to update but as far as I know they have made quite a bit of improvements in phpBB 3.2 so it would probably not be a bad idea to continue using phpBB even if it means starting from a clean slate.

Not sure if Jamie has tried but...

Upgrading from 3.0 to 3.2 guide:
https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... /upgrade3/

Upgrading from 3.1 to 3.2 guide:
https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... upgrade31/

The upgrade should work but there are few things to note.

Is the fact that the phpBB software needs to be updated the cause of no longer being able to login securely?
I started to have that problem a few days ago.

Nah. Browser are more vocal (like Firefox after the recent update) about login form on pages that do not use encrypted connection (https). Sending your login information over unencrypted connection is never (and never has been) "safe".
