Gamepad Screen Required?

Hi,

I recently acquired a WiiU without a power supply or gamepad screen for free. What I'm wondering is if I picked up a pro controller (and power supply of course), if I could play Breath Of The Wild without the screen controller.

if it is required, I'm seeing some pretty reasonable prices for the screen gamepad on eBay, but that brings up another question: is the Gamepad locked down to a single WiiU, or can I make it work with a console with which it didn't ship?

Dying to play this, and since I got the WiiU for free, I figured it could be an economical way to begin enjoying Zelda until I can afford a switch...
